Sensory Stories

‘Wow!’ said the Owl (The wide eyed owl)

Before you start the story you will need to gather some things from around your house! Don’t worry if there are things you don’t have, just find what you can!

  • A story bag (A pillow case or gym bag is perfect for this) keep each item in the bag until it’s turn in the story.
  • A toy owl, or a picture of an owl
  • For the grass – either some real grass from the garden or a piece of astro turf if you have any of that!
  • For the flowers – real flowers or plastic/silk flowers, if possible sprayed with a floral spray.
  • For the rain – water spray bottle (or a bowl of water you can flick drops from)
  • Umbrella
  • Rainmaker toy (or rice in a tub, rotate gently to make rain sounds)
  • For the wind – hand held electric fan, or paper fan. (also, optional if you don’t mind mess – bits of torn up paper to blow around with the fans!)
  • For the sun – Hot water bottle or microwaveable heat pads
  • For night time – dark piece of material (could use a blanket or duvet cover)
  • Torch or fairy lights

As each thing is mentioned in the story, pause the recording of the story and allow your learner to explore the sensory item relating to it. Encourage feeling, smelling, looking and listening as appropriate for each item. If appropriate to your learner, encourage them to spray the water/switch fan on and off to blow the paper, open and shut the umbrella, switch torch or fairy lights on and off. In the story there will be parts for you (the parent/carer) to say along with me, and also body parts to point to when we talk about the owl. Please excuse my mistakes in the recording!! Have fun!
